Sidney King’s multi-faceted career as a double bassist spans over four decades. His extensive experience as an orchestral performer includes appearances with some of the most prestigious ensembles in the country. He has performed with the symphonies of Detroit, Cincinnati, Houston, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Buffalo, and Nashville, as well as with the Louisiana Philharmonic and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. He held the position of Assistant Principal Bassist of the Louisville Orchestra from 1984-2006. He has performed at the Grand Teton Music Festival since 1991, and has served as principal bassist of the Houston Grand Opera, the Texas Opera Theater, the Sunflower Music Festival, and the Des Moines Metro Opera.
As a recitalist, Mr. King has presented solo performances at universities and conservatories throughout North and South America. Performances include recitals at the University of Iowa, Rice University, Indiana University, Duquesne University, University of Minnesota, Florida State University, University of Tennessee, University of Memphis, Ohio University, the University of Costa Rica in San José, CR, and the Conservatory Salvador Bustamante Celi in Ecuador.
As co-founder, performer, composer and arranger with the nationally prominent progressive flamenco ensemble Al Sur, Mr. King has appeared on stages, in theaters, and on broadcasts throughout the country, and has been featured as soloist with orchestras such as the San Diego Symphony and the Louisville Orchestra.
A gifted and dedicated teacher, Sidney King is currently Professor of Double Bass and Music Education at the University of Louisville School of Music. He was the Double Bass faculty/artist at the Sewanee Summer Music Festival 2006-2017. In 2011 and 2015, King was named University Teacher of the Year by the American String Teachers Association of Kentucky, and was awarded College Teacher of the Year, 2021 by the Kentucky Music Educators Association. He has served on the Board of Directors of the American String Teachers Association (2016-2018) and the International Society of Bassists (2003-2005).
Mr. King is in demand as a clinician and has presented master classes and lectures at universities and conservatories, including Florida State University, Vanderbilt University, Louisiana State University, University of Tennessee, University of Texas, University of Iowa, University of Memphis, Ohio State University, the University of Costa Rica in San Jose, Costa Rica, and the Conservatory Salvador Bustamante Celi in Ecuador.
Mr. King is a highly sought-after teacher, with students ranging from pre-collegiate through graduate level, who regularly distinguish themselves in honors ensembles and music festivals nationwide. Alumni of his program appear regularly with outstanding professional ensembles such as the Louisville Orchestra, Nashville Symphony, Chattanooga Symphony, Illinois Symphony, Knoxville Symphony, and Huntsville Symphony among others.
As faculty mentor of the University of Louisville's string education program, Mr. King's robust initiatives have produced a new generation of outstanding string educators in Kentucky and the surrounding region. He supervises the activities of U of L's student chapter of the American String Teachers Association. ASTA has recognized the accomplishments of this student group, selecting them for the “Outstanding Student ASTA Chapter Award” in 2018, 2020 and 2024.
Sidney King is a versatile composer, working in a wide variety of styles. His works include progressive flamenco dances, symphonic compositions, pedagogical works, sacred choral music, incidental stage music and more. His compositions for the double bass in solo and chamber music settings have contributed significantly to the repertoire of that instrument. Popular works include Hazelhurst Suite for solo double bass (2011), May Songs for double bass and piano (2022), Sixth and Groove Suite for double bass quartet (2017), Tangos Ardientes for two double basses and percussion (2013) and Tangos Ternos for double bass trio. Other chamber works include numerous compositions and arrangements for bass quartet, an Advent/Christmas collection for flute and double bass, two Flamenco dances for harp and double bass, and a set of Appalachian hymns for cello and double bass. His double bass compositions have been performed widely, by members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Nashville Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, Houston Symphony, and Louisville Orchestra, and at outstanding university music schools such as Northwestern University, University of North Texas, Carnegie Mellon University, and many others.
Mr. King has received commissions from such diverse organizations as the Wabass Institute, the Sewanee Summer Music Festival, the Freudig Singers of Western New York, the Bunbury Theatre of Louisville, Ky., and various outstanding school string programs throughout the country. His larger scale compositions have been performed by artists and ensembles nationally at venues and events such as the Midwest clinic, the American String Teachers National Conference, the Orchestra America Festival, and numerous state MEA conventions. Recent notable performances of ensemble works include Gifts for a King for SAB chorus; Entre Dos Luces for solo double bass and full orchestra; Duende al Rojo for solo double bass and string orchestra, Sueños Sureños for solo string quintet and string orchestra, and Rasguelo for string orchestra. His choral compositions are published by Really Good Music and St. James Music Press.
